My school made the switch to RenWeb over the summer and are wondering what other Lutheran Schools are using it. Hopefully we can benefit from a "shared brain". Some issues we are struggling with right now are: 1) Getting GPA's to appear on the repor…

Philosophy

Technology is a part of our daily lives in one form or another. Computers, the Internet, video and multimedia are not only a vital part of the business world, but also take up a large portion of our leisure time. The technology around us is constantly changing and affecting our lives in new and exciting ways. As an institution of learning, it is necessary to take advantage of current technology tools and use them to promote learning and increase productivity. We also need to equip our students with the critical thinking and problem solving abilities needed to adapt to changing technology and use it effectively as a tool for learning, expressing and communicating.

While it is important that we teach technology skills, these skills should not be considered a separate subject, but rather an integral part of all subjects. It is the role of the teacher to integrate these skills into the core curriculum and lessons, guide and direct student technology use, and model ethical use of online tools and resources.

If You Can't Beat 'Em, Buy 'Em

Just announced yesterday - Blackboard Buys ANGEL Learning

As one of the few K-8 Lutheran schools using an LMS I must say my knee-jerk response is that I don’t like it. We switched to ANGEL to get away from Blackboard. We thought Bb was too expensive and the support was weak to non-existant.

We're just finishing up our 2nd year with ANGEL. I like the improvements they've made and the company's willingness "show… Continue

Heaven 2.0

I was just having a little hallway conversation between classes with a couple of the teachers who work next to my room. We were discussing Revelation 21:1 which says, "Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away..." This brought up an amusing question. I wonder about those teachers who are resistant to technology and changing their teaching to adapt to new media and Web 2.0 tools. Will they be the same ones who, upon arriving at their eternal… Continue

Some Interesting Thoughts & Ideas

I came across these blog posts in my Google Reader. Thought I'd share...

‘This I Believe’ -an assignment catalyst - Here's an interesting writing/podcasting idea posted by Dale Basler. It's based on the book "This I Beleive" - a collection of essays. I think our students might be able to offer an interesting twist on this assignment by adding a C… Continue

Southern CA Wildfires

Thanks to all for keeping those of us in Southern California in your prayers. As of this morning the winds seem to finally be dying down, but things are still hot and dry. Here at my school in Orange, CA we are not in any danger but must keep the kids inside all day because of all the smoke in the air.

If you want to see what specific areas have been affected by the fires, Brett Harvey of the California Discovery Educator Network posted this blog with links to Google Maps with fire upda… Continue

Hi Dennis,

With your work in Education Technology, I recommend you take a look at Wiziq's virtual classroom and authorstream's power point presentation platform. Both are web based platforms, have a bunch of features and free basic service.

Dennis,
We have Gateway tablets for PC wireless to a projector on the ceiling. The tablet is wireless, projector recieves wireless as well as has the monitor connection to it, the teacher's desktop and document camera are connected to the projector, and a 4 speaker system for audio is set up in 2 classrooms at our school, St. Paul Lutheran in Boca Raton. The tablet, speaker system, projector, screen, and document camera cost us $5500 to set up the room, including the electrical. Contact me for more info if you need it. Rob,
Our plan is to go 1 to 1 with sixth grade Fall 2008. My first choice was to go Mac, but everyone on the committee liked the tablet PC's from Gateway better. I have to admit, I've been using mine for a week and the battery seems to last about 6 hours - not bad. Our middle school teachers will get their tablets on Oct 1 and start training on One Note. We've also purchased a mobile lab of 30 tablets to start getting students used to them as well. The plan is to continue using tablets for the one-to-one program.

Right now our classrooms have projectors, but it would be nice for the teacher to not have to be tethered to a big thick VGA cord at their desk.

Several of our teachers already use Interwrite tablets connected to their PC, and that's works pretty good, plus it's a lot cheaper than a smartboard.

Dennis,
Based on you post on Steve's page, do all your teachers have tablets or just that one? We will be looking to go to a 1:1 solution within the next three years and was wondering what you thought about the tablets v. laptops?

I haven't used a wireless projector connection, but I haven't heard good things about them? But that's only through the grapevine :-)

Scratch looks a lot like the Alice software. If you've seen Alice before, is that a fair comparison, or is there something I'm missing?
