Technology in Lutheran Schools

Most of what is new in Snow Leopard is under the hood. Apple has peaked and tweaked the OS so that it runs faster and better. One of those under the hood items is a greatly reduced footprints, it takes up less room on your hard drive!

Apple has taken on 64-bit technology so that you can now have insane amounts of RAM. In theory your Mac can support up to 16 terabytes of memory. Snow Leopard now supports Microsoft Exchange 2007. Mail, address Book, and iCal can use the Exchange Web Services protocol. What Apple calls Grand Central, to put it into regular user terms, your Mac’s speed is dramatically faster! QuickTime X has been redone so the Media playback and JavaScript are greatly improved.

Then there is always the question of how buggy a new system is. I have run into three and two don’t count. The first on has to do with Adobe products. You can get a message that your license has run out. (This also happened in OS 10.5 also.) All you have to do is run the Adobes fix, License Recover program found on their web site. The next so called bug is actually HP not getting all the print drivers to Apple at the time of release. (Printers are now being handled through the web) most of the drivers are now available with the 10.6.1 upgrade. The last one will only affect those using GradeQuick Web. The Mac GQ Web plug-in stopped working. Apparently Edline (Jackson Software) were invited to get help with their plug-in but refused any help. As this second week in October they still haven’t fixed the problem.

One bug I have read about but not seen is some font issues.

Is Snow Leopard worth the price? You be the judge, one version one price! (Ok, to the other is a Family pack for 5 computers.)

If you have any questions let me know!
