Just wondering if anyone uses 8e6 filtering software. If you do, I would like to know more about it. Also, does anyone have a good filtering software they can recommend if you don't use 8e6. Thanks!

Kathy - I'm not sure how far you are in the review of options, but here is a site that compares 10 different packages: http://www.internet-filter-review.toptenreviews.com/ . These are reviews for home use of the software, but four or five of these software packages also have business/school solutions.

This site has yet another list of 9 or 10 filtering options: http://www2.scholastic.com/browse/article.jsp?id=4395

We're using Squid (cacheing) and SquidGuard (filtering) on an old Dell machine. It's not easy to setup (if you are also learning Linux at the time), but it is free, and that's exactly the amount that fit into my budget. Also along the free lines, we're using http://www.opendns.org for our DNS resolution, and they offer a reasonable degree of filtering as well.

But OpenDNS is really only a solution if you're filtering all of your stations/users in the same manner (this sentence is only mostly true).

We do our content filtering through our SonicWall firewall.

Comsifter is what we use. I really like it because you can set-up different filter groups which allows you to put users in those different groups. Teachers can be allowed a more freedom for searching than say, students.

Good luck in your research!

Josh,

Did you find this at all difficult to set up with your current router? We have AT & T DSL and Ron Lambert at Comsift says we need more information from them then they are giving me. I'm getting someone in this week to work with me that I'm hoping will understand this better then I seem to, but it's been frustrating.

We have ATT DSL also, I don't think there is much to it. But as I have learned, every location is unique.

If you want to give me a call, I might be able to help you over the phone. Don't hold your breath, but I will give it a shot.

I'd appreciate that. I'm at home right now. I'll try to give you a call from school tomorrow. I won't be in until about 11. Will you still be there?

11ish should be great! If for some reason I miss your call, just leave a message and I will get back with you a.s.a.p!
