Technology in Lutheran Schools

Technology in Lutheran Schools

What are the copyright issues with using ustream? For example, streaming Church Services is that ok? as long as you don't rebroadcast it (This is for a church just has the regular CCL? Licences for music). What about in the classroom, will you need parent permission. I believe in California it is illegal to audio tape someone without them knowing. I was just curious of different ways to use the technology, and maybe you wouldn't want it like in your classroom (some parents hover too much as it is).

I think streaming is considered broadcasting.

I would say anytime you are posting anything like videos or pictures of students on a public site you should secure written parental permission. You should probably also talk with your administrator(s) about it as well.

We have the parents sign a consent form as part of registration that allows their childrens' photographs to be used by the school.

I was thinking this could be a good way to have a student home sick still listen and participate with the class. But the drawback is parents hawking you even more.

Thanks JBid :)

One of the companies selling video on demand services had something like that where a student could watch a live stream.

Our media director and I looked up the license information on the CCLI and CVLI,(or whatever those letters are.) From our understanding, and it's pretty limited, even broadcasting or streaming of church services can be against the license depending on the music that is used and also the video that are used if you have screens. Singing hymns is not too much of a worry, but if you have a praise band, that's when you have to check and re-check the license agreement for those hymns. Using Technology can be SOOOO CRAZY!!

Please, someone correct me if I am wrong.

The issue that we have been getting into is that the pastor comes in on a Thursday before the service and wants a clip of for example "A Few Good Men". Even if that video is covered under the CVLI license, it might be against our agreement to use if we make copies of the service on DVD or stream it to the web.

Anyways, to get to your idea of streaming your classroom lectures if a student is absent. You shouldn't need parental permission is you are not showing students or saying full names on the stream. If you are shooting a full classroom shot and using students in demonstrations, then the permissions need to come into play.
